While looking for new ideas for childrens birthday cakes, I read an article that made me pause. The article, found at Postbulletin.com, was written by a dad coming to grips with his 10 year old son growing up.
According to the article, Jeff Reinartz (the dad) was reflecting on the milestones his son had accomplished. The usual ones like his first walk, first birthday party, etc. And along the way, finding answers to a host of questions he asked the day his son was born. Questions like what’s the future hold, do I have what it takes and so on.
Suddenly, 10 years down the road is here. Now his son wants money instead of toys, pie instead of cake, and is showing signs of coming teenage-hood. The author’s conclusion is that birthdays remind us that we’re running out of time.
And that’s what made me pause. I have always tried to enjoy my children at the moment in time that they are. Instead of wishing they we’re older or younger. Because each moment is so fleeting. And all the childrens birthday cakes I’ve made are like special markers along the journey I’m taking with my children.
Here’s how Mr. Reinartz put it:
“It’s impossible to know how many times people shared their sage advice about holding onto those moments, because of how fast kids grow up. I have cherished all those moments. Jake’s 10th birthday party was just the most recent reminder of how fast he is growing up.”
I couldn’t agree more. So as you’re baking childrens birthday cakes, planning parties, and throwing together themes, cherish every second of it. It all passes too fast.

Let me know what you think.

P.S. I just found a wonderful book at Amazon on baking childrens birthday cakes. It’s called 50 Easy Party Cakes, and it really is super! I got so many ideas from it. Though some of them don’t seem as easy as the book title suggests, there are more than enough for the “mere mortal moms” out there. Anyway, I thought you should check it out.
