When I’ve looked for childrens birthday cakes at my local bakery in the past, I’ve always been amazed at how fantastic those picture cakes look. Whether it was Spider-Man, Cinderella, or Lightning McQueen, those “drawings” were always perfect. And I’d alway leave feeling a little inferior.
I’m lucky just to spread the main layer without ripping chunks of cake off.
Well, imagine my surprise when I discovered that those glorious works of artistic sugary perfection were so easy, my eight year old could do it. It’s true. And thanks to a great little tutorial from Fabulousfoods.com, I think you can do it too.
Here’s a snippet from the article:
“Does you child have a favorite cartoon character? Wouldn’t it be nice if you could put the company logo on the office party cake? Now you can. Transferring simple line drawings to cakes may seem like a job for the professionals, but it’s really one of the easiest projects possible for a beginner cake decorator. It’s true, you’re friends will be ultra-impressed and only you have to know how simple it really was.”
Here are the basic steps. First, you need to get rice paper (most baking goods stores have it). After picking your picture, use a Crayola crayon to trace the picture. Then put the rice paper on the cake and trace the “traced” picture with icing. And presto…you’re an instant baking Picasso.
Now if you’re scratching your head a little, let me clear up a couple of things. First of all the crayon is safe as long as it’s non-toxic. That’s why you go with Crayola. And second the rice paper is naturally dissolved by the icing. Easy, huh?
Who knew decorating childrens birthday cakes could be so easy and fun.
I’d love to hear what you think.

Thanks Alyse! Great advice! My son wants Super Mario for his birthday cake, so I am going to try this trick.
